Yoga Classes for All Ages, Abilities, and Bodies in Kenton, Dawlish, Teignmouth, and Online

My Style of Yoga

If I had to describe what style of yoga I teach in a three words it would be ‘Gentle Hatha Yoga’.

However this encompasses a wide breadth of interest, knowledge and experience from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Functional Movement, Somatics, breathwork and mindfulness. My approach recognises that we are all uniquely different and postures and movements are therefore offered with modifications to suit each individual – It is ‘Your’ yoga so it must be right for you. The focus of the practice is on cultivating body awareness and the internal experience of yoga rather than whether we can get ourselves into a particular shape.

Mat Based Yoga

Classes are suitable for all ages, all abilities and all bodies. Student numbers are kept small to allow individual attention and there is a friendly, supportive, non-competitive feel to the class. All classes start with a period of centring and a warming up before practicing simple flowing sequences, movements to mobilise and strengthen and promote balance as well as held postures before ending with a breathing practice and relaxation time.

Each term I introduce a theme which runs through and brings together the practice. It could be philosophical such as the chakras or gunas, or psychological such as letting go or acceptance or it might be based on something more physical such as balance or caring for the knees.

Each week knowledge, skills and muscle memory are gradually built up and students are always pleasantly surprised at how they have progressed and how their body is able to move. Some of the many benefits of a weekly class are increased awareness of how the body moves along with improved relaxation and concentration.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga classes are suitable for any student who cannot or does not want to get up and down off the floor. The classes are small and welcoming and consist of gentle movements to mobilise and warm up the body from top to toe. There is work on releasing tension and aiding balance. Also a strong emphasis on relaxation and breathing techniques which may help to manage stress, anxiety and pain.

Even though the movements are gentle they can be further modified to suit all bodies so that everyone can work in a way that is safe and accessible. I am a qualified Gentle Years Yoga teacher® and have trained to be able to specifically adapt yoga for adults with conditions such as hip/knee replacement, arthritis, MS or hypertension and more.

Weekly Zoom Sessions

If you come from further afield or cannot make in-person sessions for any reason, then I offer yoga classes over Zoom. Zoom is easy to access from any device such as a laptop or tablet, you can even cast from your mobile to a television. If you are unsure about how to get set up on Zoom I am very happy to talk you through the process.

The yoga class on Zoom is primarily the same as a face-to-face class but I do take into account that you may not have as much space around you or access to equipment such as blocks and belts.

Outside Yoga Classes

Each year I run some outdoor yoga classes usually in my garden but sometimes at the local beach. These lovely nature inspired sessions have proved very popular.

Garden Sessions are running June, July & August

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from the class?

The class always starts with a moment of quiet to start to draw the attention inwards and increase awareness of the body, mind and breath.

There are plenty of mobilisation exercises to warm up the muscles and joints.

We will then work with a variety of postures which will include those that promote increased flexibility, strength and stamina, and aid balance and coordination.

To finish there is breath-work and a relaxation, meditation or mindfulness practice.

What if I can't do the Postures?

I will always offer modifications and alternatives so that the yoga is accessible for all abilities and ages and in the case of any injuries or health-related issues.

I also keep my classes small so that students can receive individual attention which enables everyone to progress and develop at their own pace.

Is there anything else I need to know or bring?

I would suggest you wear loose comfortable clothes that enable you to stretch and bend and not to eat a big meal within 2 hours of attending the class. But it is advisable to have eaten something light before you come and to bring water with you.

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic I no longer provide equipment to share. Please bring a yoga mat or a non-slip blanket or towel. A block and belt are useful as well. I can always order these for you at cost, from sites where I get a teacher discount but bargains can also be found from shops such as TKMaxx and Lidl. It is a good idea to bring a blanket for use during relaxation at the end of practice, especially in the winter.
